Cowboys, Sam and Butch go traveling and buy an old chuck wagon in bad shape and a mule named Sitter to pull it. The chuck wagon falls apart and when Sitter gets tired, he sits down. It takes all day to get back home.

Junia, a dedicated mule with an important job, assists in delivering books and reading material to people in the Kentucky hills and woods during the Great Depression.
